The Right to Education (RTE) Act is a landmark legislation in India that aims to provide free and compulsory education to all children between the ages of 6 and 14. The Act was enacted in 2009 and came into force in 2010.
Under the RTE Act, every child has the right to free and compulsory education in a neighbourhood school till the completion of elementary education. The Act also lays down certain duties of the government, such as ensuring that every child has access to a school within a reasonable distance from their home, providing infrastructure and facilities in schools, and ensuring that all teachers are properly trained.
The RTE Act also provides for the establishment of School Management Committees (SMCs) in every school. The SMCs are responsible for the overall management of the school, including monitoring the utilization of grants, ensuring that the school meets certain norms and standards, and addressing grievances of parents and students.
If any person or organization believes that the provisions of the RTE Act are not being implemented properly, they can file a complaint with the appropriate authorities. The Act provides for the establishment of State Commissions for the Protection of Child Rights (SCPCRs) and National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to ensure that the provisions of the Act are being implemented properly.
